Q. Are there any blackout kits for the taillights on a 89 Probe, can I
tint them?
A. Contributor: Jay Bird (probeboy78@hotmail.com)
(answer applies to all Probes)
no there are no mass produced kits (ie: GTS) for the Probe of any years,
yes you can tint them, however it will most probably violate equipment
laws in every area, and you will probably get equipment violation tickets
for it. There is a tint spray that you can buy and you can spray it on
your taillights, I've also heard of people using window tint film, but
this was on the 93+ probes.....

Q. When my windows are lowered and I close the doors, the glass rattles.
Is there anything I can do about this?
A. Contributor: Stan Koh (stankoh@uclink.berkeley.edu)
I recently replaced my front door speakers on my Probe, and found that the
rattling of the glass was caused by the glass hitting the back of the
installed speaker as the door was closed. My solution was to glue some
thin padding on the back of the speaker before installation, effectively
stopping the rattling.

Q. I hear a loud thunking noise in the front of my car during hard
acceleration/braking and turning. It usually only happens when I'm
autocrossing my car, and only in extreme situations. I have had the
engine mounts replaced but it didn't solve the problem. I think it might
be a problem with the front sway bar. It is really loud and I don't want
to do any damage to it. Has anyone had this problem? If so how do I fix
it. Thanks.

Q. When the windows are down in my Probe and I close the doors, they
window glass rattle against the door. Is there anything I can do about
this?
A. Contributor: Simon Lacey (Lacey Aust@aol com)
Yes, You can option to put some stick on foam pieces on the inside of the
door where the glass hits the power window railings. Just put enough on
to make sure the windows don't clash against the railing and not enough to
stop the windows going up and down.

The dealer told us it would take 10 hours to remove the dash. The part

supposed to be a part of the variable assist power steering system. Where
is this part located, we can't seem to find it.. A pic in .pdf format

Q. I have a 1990 Probe with the non-turbo four cyl. and 5 speed tranny. I
just recently noticed that the stickshift seems to have a little more play
in it than usual. When in neutral, I can move the stick side to side
about 2 inches before I get any spring resistence. Also when in gear, I
can feel the same slack. I have no problems shifting, I've just never
noticed that before. Is it in the linkage or, God forbid, a problem with
the transaxle. It has about 116,000 miles under it's belt and I take good
care of it, I'm just wondering if I'm being paranoid and just never
noticed it or if there is a real problem..Thanks

Q. I own a 1989 Ford Probe LX. I am experiencing some problems. They are:

1. My driver's side seatbelt does NOT retract. Is there any simple fix
for this? It is not caught on anything, I think the spring or pulley
popped or somthing like that.

2. 1989 Probes are listed with a 15.1 gallon gas tank. I filled up my
tank when it was close to empty and got almost 8 gallons of gas in it. I
was driving around and after the gas gauge goes below 1/2 full, the
reading seems to be inaccurate. I was almost on empty (my car was putting
at stops because I needed gas so bad) and I filled up and got about 8-9
gallons of gas in the tank. Anyone else think that the Probe is less than
a 15.1 gallon tank? Anyone else have a similar problem? Is the gauge
broken? If so, then why am I getting less than 9 gallons when I am close
to empty?

3. I have an exaust leak in my Probe. Any suggestions on what to do?
How much would this cost around?

4. Any suggestions on how to clear the "smoke" out of my engine? I
failed inspection for this and a leak in my exhaust.

5. I have a broken off power antenna. I have a makeshift antenna that
gets almost NO radio signals in. Anyone know where I can get a new
antenna? How much do these cost?

6. Any suggestions to improve gas millage on my Probe? I just put in a
fuel injection cleaner and I still am not getting the efficency that I'd
like.

Any help to these questions would be great and much appreciated! Also,
any tips that people can give me would also be helpful. I am a first time
Probe owner and so far I am very happy, but anything I can do to improve
my performance, I'd like to know about. Thanks!

Q. Please email me your reply!
I wanted to purchase steering parts, but i'm not sure what is wrong. I
have a 93 probe gt 5-speed
and if I drive hard(let it rev to 4500 rpm's or over) the steering will
give out on me and make it feel
like there is no power steering at all. If push in the clutch and let
the rpm's come down to 1500 rpm's
for 10 seconds, the power steering will come back. Is there a known
problem with
this, or can you tell me what I need to do. Thank you much. Paul

Q. I am interested in buying a used Probe. It would be my first car and I
was hoping for some advice. I read in a consumer's report that the early
Ford Probe did not hold up well and was even called a "clunker" Not until
they used the design for the Mazada did the car earn value. I was
wondering if this report is acurate. I was also hoping for some advice on
prices as well. I came across a 90 Ford Probe with a few scratches and 83k
miles. is $3995 a fair price? I aslo saw another Probe, a 94 Probe SE with
53k miles for $7980. I am in the market for a car in the area of $40000 to
$70000. Which do you think is the better option? I know there are many
variables, but I was hoping for a rough choice. Last but not least, I am
only 16 years old and was wondering if my issurance would be very high for
this specific sports car. I am on the honor list so my issurance is less
than the norm. Thanks for your time and I would really appreciate your

A. Contributor: Brian (CrnBread11@aol.com)
My answer:

I have a 1989 Ford Probe LX and I have had these both problems with it.
Thankfully the only problems I have had with it since I bought it used.
The "jitters" or shaking or anything along those lines is probably related
to the exhaust. Probably an exhaust leak or a bad muffler. I have an
exhaust leak that I am getting fixed soon (I failed inspection for it) and
I called up a few places and they said that any rattling is probably
caused by this. Also another way to improve this is doing a fuel
injection cleanser (STP is probably the best) on a full tank of gas and
driving that tank of gas until it is empty. Then do a fuel injection and
carburator cleanser on another full tank of gas (use STP if you used STP
the first time). I talked to a mechanic and he told me that if you do not
know how often the fuel injection has been cleaned or when it was last
cleaned, run a fuel injection cleaner followed by a fuel
injection/carburator cleaner. It will improve performance (it reduced the
rattling for me), make acceleration better, improve gas milage and overall
make the car run a lot better. Also, to improve the acceleration, change
the spark plugs. I did this and make my 4cyl run like a 6cyl in
acceleration performance. Also a good engine treatment like Slick 50 with
an oil change and a transmission treatment should reduce the rattling a
litte more and improve acceleration. I hope this helps! It worked for
me, all I need now is the exhaust leak fixed.

Q. I have a 1989 Ford Probe LX that I bought used with a power antenna.
The power antenna is snapped off, but the motor runs fine. The last piece
of the antenna is still in the car, but the rest is nowhere to be found.
I want to get a new antenna. All the ones I see to replace a 89 Ford
Probe cost $45-$90. And most include a motor. I do not need a motor, but
I need a power antenna that will work with my car. Anyone know where I
can get one? Anyone have one for sale?

Q. My 89 Probe went through its first altinator after seven years 45k
miles not too bad. The next alt. went 10 weeks later and the next ten
weeks after that. My mechanic after much head scratching and service
bulletin checking and talking with people at the local Ford dealership
decided that the problem "according to ford" was that the pulleys on the
engine were not the right size...a manufacturing defect he said according
to the people at ford. He said to refer to service bulletin (# 89-7-5
April 1989 No start - low state of battery.) The parts and labor will
cost me apprx $160.00 even though Ford says this was a manufactured
problem. Help.
Do you think this is the real problem ?????
Someone please get back to me.
Thanks, Scott

Q. When I am going 40-60mph and then slow down to 25-40 mph for some
reason and then accelerate again my car doesn't seem to accelerate as fast
as I think it should. Is this a problem with my engine or is it normal?
Also when i am going over 50 mph I hear a loud noise coming from what
sounds like my rear tires, I was told a belt was broken so I bought new
rear tires and I still hear the sound. What is it?
A. Contributor: Bill Carrigan (bill_c_69@hotmail.com)
A. Contributor: Brian (crnbread11@aol.com)
Answer:

OK. What year and model Probe do you own? I have a 1989 LX and I have
had similar problems. Acceleration was a key concern of mine. Also not
so great gas milage was as well. If you try a fuel injection cleaner
followed by a fuel injection and carburator cleaner, that will improve the
acceleration a little. Also, try a transmission treatment. This is
supposed to be done annualy, but many people ignore it. That will also
help with acceleration. Another thing to try would be an engine treatment
with your next oil change. Try Slick 50, it works the best. Now for the
squeeking type sound. My Probe squeaks/screeches around 42-47mph and then
does it again around 50mph. The problem goes in and out. Sometimes it
squeaks a lot for a long period of time, sometimes just for a short period
of time. I have an exhaust leak in my car and I was told that this is
what is causing the squeak. It is in the same place as you, the rear of
the car, seems to be from the tires. Mine seems to be only on the
passenger side though, and that is the side where the exhaust is. So I
think it is an exhaust problem. Have you had any luck fixing this problem
yet? Anyone have advice on how to fix this squeak?

Q. On my 1995 Ford Probe (bought late 94), I have had the following
intermittant problem, usually on cold and/or damp days: On restarting a
warm engine, the engine will crank okay but then die
immediately. If I keep my foot on the gas, it will run but die again
immediately on letting off the gas. While revving or maintaining the gas
to keep it running, the Check Engine light comes on. If I rev upto
5000-6000 rpm and then let off the gas, it will idle okay and the CE light
goes out.
Any ideas. It has 37k on it and has new air and fuel filters

avoid stalling in idle, I had to purchase an Idle Air Control Valve pn

diagnostics.
Hope this helps anyone.

said the plugboots were arcing and the applied some dielectric grease. but
it didn't help. The car has 20k miles on it and no extended warranty, so
I would like to resolve the problem before the warranty is up. Any ideas?

Im thinking I have to Reset the Computer?

I have an 89 Probe LX. I had this problem for awhile until I fixed it
about a month ago. Try the following:

1. Tighten ALL of the screws and bolts around the oil tank. Make sure
that they are all tight and fit.

2. Look for the areas that have the most ammounts of oil on them. Look
at the seem near those parts. Check the seem and see if there is a gap in
it. If so, you can fill it. I filled the gap of my Probe with J.W. Weld
or something like that. It's like liquid steel that hardens and stays.
It comes in 2 tubes, steel and hardener. You mix them both and get this
liquid steel. Apply it evenly, make sure you fill in the gaps. Once it
dries (takes about 6 hours), reinspect it to make sure it set ok. You may
need to re-apply it again in some spots. Make sure you overlap it above
and below the seem though. If you don't oil will still leak.

I managed to blow out the

mount
properly, because the factory subwoofer had no rubber/foam/cardboard
gasket
around its rim. Instead it mated with the raised inner rim of the
subwoofer
enclosure, which basically took the place of a gasket. I had to carefully
remove the gasket from the Kicker (using a scalpel blade at first, and
then by
moistening the final layer and literally rubbing the paper laminate away)
before I could mount it. It now works quite well. The low bass is more
noticeable, and the upper bass less so. I'd like to eventually add an
equalizer - or try to adjust the subwoofer amplifier somehow (see below)
- to adjust the response.

However, I'm not sure where the separate(?) amplifier that powers the
subwoofer is. The main amp is only four-channel. Does anyone know where
it's mounted?

Q. I have a 1990 ford probe with the mazda 2.2l non-turbo SOHC engine. I
need to know what style of alternator it uses. Do all of the 2.2l engines
use the same bolt pattern/ belt configuration? If you know what other
cars use the same alternator that would be almost as helpful. so I guess
the question is: What style alternator do first generation 2.2l probes

Q. I own a 1989 Probe LX. I bought this car used and the antenna was
snapped off when the original owner had the car. Since the Probe has a
power antenna, it's hard to replace. The motor still runs perfect, but
there is no antenna to move up and down. Does anyone know where I can get
a replacement antenna? I checked out Pep Boys, Strauss and those places,
but they ONLY sell them with a motor (that takes about 8 hours to install
from what I've heard) for $60-$100. Installed they said it would cost
from $100-$350. That's WAY too expensive. Any help would be

I went through this in january of 1998. They are out there, but you'll
need to invest a good chunk of time. I bought mine on 2/14/98. Fully
loaded, minus the automatic trans, I paid $16,700 for a $22,500 sticker
car and got 2.9% financing for 48 months, and that was before trade-in,
college rebate, and credit card rebates. E-mail me, and tell me what state

Q. I have a problem! I have a 1994 Probe, 2.0. Recently I had to change
the water pump and I decided to change the timing belt at the same time.
Before I ever took off the timing belt, I brought up #1 cyl to TDC, made
sure that the camshaft pulley marks, (E & I) were directly across from
each other, and that the crankshaft notch was aligned straight up with the
oil pump mark. I took off the tensioner spring, loosened the tensioner
pulley, slid the belt off, put the new belt on, tightened the tensioner
pulley, reconnected the tensioner spring and made sure that none of the
alignment marks had change, (I also made sure that the distributor rotor
pointed to #1 terminal - dead on). I then rotated the crankshaft twice,
rechecked the marks - all dead on - and rotated the crankshaft again, just
for good measure, and everything was dead on again. There are two
problems. The first is that I had to adjust the distributor to the end of
its travel to get the timing at 10 degress BTDC - (remember everything was
dead on!!) The second problem is that the engine will not idle when warm.
It will idle at about 1250 RPM when cold. There is no loss of power, no
spark knock, no backfire when letting off from high rpm's, it runs fine,
but it will not idle. Where did I go wrong?? E-Mail me at

A. Contributor: bob (chiquito@gte.net)
Andrew I guess you have a early model. You need to remove the interior
panel the wiring and the nuts that attatch the lights. The problem is the
gaskets dry up and the water leaks in. The water will collect in the
lights and in the tirejack well. it will rust out the rear panels if you
dont get it fixed. Sorry I dont know of a good way to seal this problem.
You can dry out the lights with a hair dryer but you must stop the leaks.
All three lights will leak so fix them all.

 A. Contributor: Shane campbell (lordz)

A. Contributor: Brian (CrnBread11@aol.com)
Well, I think most probes would "shimmy" at 180. I think if you got
yourself a good transmission treatment and a good oil additive (Dura Lube,
Slik 50, anything that is very strong) it may cut down on the shimmy.
Also, check your tire alignment. That will reduce the ammount of shaking
that occurs. And sometimes the exhaust system can make your car shake as
well. Hope this helps.

David, yes there is an area for a "stock" timepiece in the center of the
dashboard on the first generation probes - you may want to try looking for
one in a local salvage yard or check in the back section of your probe
manual to see if you can order one direct from the factory - but I think
your best bet would be to go to the salvage yard to get one for a lower
price. But remember, color is a factor (of course).
Good luck, Bryan Rockwell

Q. No question, just a comment. I bought my 1998 Probe in August of

In short, the Porbe has been the best car I have ever owned.

Jim,
It's nice to see that there is another
Ford Probe enthusiast out there, but the
probe was discontinued in 1997 sorry --
But if you mean 1988 not 1998 you are still
mistaken, because the probe came out in 1989 to the consumer that is
unless-I'm totally wrong
and you have one of the few and rare 1988.5
probes. If so i'm sorry-don't take any of
this the wrong way, I'm not trying to be a
smart a$$. Bryan Rockwell

This summer I purchased a 89 Probe LX with a manual transaxle, which
needed to be replaced. I had a wrecked 90 Ford Probe GL with a perfect

automatic. We were unaware of the trouble we would run into. Everything
is working fine except I do not have overdrive. We have talked to
everyone about what we need to do...some people have never heard of what
we did. I know we can rewire it, but that will cost approx. $2000. We
are lost on ideas and would appreciate greatly if you could help us in any

I believe that the power assist that tightens up the steering at higher

A. No prise out the panel with the two/three switches on from the door -
the panel and switches all come as one unit and it's quite expensive. The
poor retaining clips always break when you remove the panel but don't
worry - you'll have to replace the unit piecemeal anyway. The wiring is on
one multiplug which is easily removable.

Q. '93 probe gt, 80,000 miles. Stock no upgrades. I get intermittant engine failure when and only when driving at freeway speeds, 60+mph. Car completely shuts down, I am able to coast to a stop and from the shoulder restart the car and drive away under full power. Suspicious of the fuel pump, but not willing to play trial and error at those prices. I'm in a wait until something breaks mode. Any suggestions??

Q. I just bought a '93 Ford Probe GT with 77,000 miles on it. The past couple of days i have noticed that when I am in neutral, and after I give it a lot of gas, the rpm's come down to a point where it is almost lugging. Twice I have done this and the car has died completely and the "check engine" light comes on as well as the "fuel cutoff" light. I also noticed that when I am driving, like in 1, 2, or 3rd gear I'll give it gas but it feels like the car is holding back or something and then all of a sudden it takes off. I was wondering what might be the problem? I think the fuel injectors might be dirty and could use a cleaning. whatever the problem is, the car is under warranty so hopefully I should be allright. Can you help me with my question??? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q. My 96 Probe GT's transmission went out at 13,000 miles. I had to replace the passenger side visor, adjust the thing that squirts the washer fluid. I have had to take in multiple times for leaks such as power steering, and my Ford 6 disc changer went out on me less than 6 weeks after I got it installed. Do all Probes have this many problems, cause I have a 36,000 bumper to bumper and a 60,000 extended warranty, but it's got me wondering if I should trade it in before it costs me to much in repairs. So I guess my question is---are there records of a lot of problems, and if so, big enough problems where I should get rid of it before the warranty goes out?

Remove the black plastic cover directly over the tail-light assembly. (There are three arrows indicating location of locking-tabs, pry gently with blade of flat screw-driver) Remove the exposed Phillips screw and slide the assembly toward the outside of the car. ie. Left assembly to the left and right assemblt to the right. There may be no need to remove the previously mentioned black plastic cover, but it is quite simple to do and gives a better view of the job. While in there cleanout dust and dirt.

A. Contributor: Chris Monteith (chris_monteith@metrodesk.metrotor.on.ca)
Check with your local Mazda dealer. As most of you already know, the Probe is a Mazda MX6 with a different name and shape. I recently needed a small sway-bar linkage for my '94 Probe and was horrified to discover that Ford wanted $124. Even though I know that Probe parts cost more than just about anything on the market, I found this to be excessive beyond reason. I called the Mazda dealer who wanted $77 for the same part. This is why I own my last Ford. Parts for my Integra are seldom unreasonably priced. Eventually my mechanic found the part for $35. Prices quoted are in Canadian $.

Q. My 1989 Ford Probe LX starts but won't idle. Once it starts, there is a sudden loss of RPM and the car stalls out. Occasionally it will start up and run, but when put in gear stalls out again. What is the problem? How much will it cost to get fixed?
A. Contributor: Brian (CrnBread11@aol.com)
Well, I just had this problem. I need a new distributor-$404, rotor-$12.15, and a new cap-$39.03. The distributor for the Ford Probe is one of the most expensive ones made. Most cost around $150-300. I got a real good deal on the price considering the local Ford dealership was going to charge me $489 for the distributor itself. This work can be done at home with a buddy or something, but it is HIGHLY recommended that you let a professional mechanice handle this one. If you mess this job up, you can kiss your car's engine good-bye and it'll cost probably $1500-$2000 to get everything back in order. At least if a mechanice botches the job, they have insurence and will be able to fix it. Hope this helps some people. Any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Q. My '94 Probe's engine will occasionally cut out when I stop at traffic lights. The rpm's will go up and down rapidly and then the engine will die. The fuel cutout light comes on when this happens. The check engine light also comes on sometimes but I don't know if that is related or not. I have taken it to two different places to be fixed. One place changed a spark plug and the other cleaned the fuel filter. Both places hooked it up to a diagnostics machine. I recently bought my Probe and don't want to sell it, so does anyone know what the problem is and how it can be fixed? Thanks, Laura

Q. We have a Ford Probe 1990 V6 Auto. The engine is now "loping" and the so-called local experts are saying it due to an "Idle Air Control Motor". I can't find this in the Haynes Auto Repair Manual. They say the computer told them so. The engine won't remain idle. It continues to die. It did not die, at first, after some driving time. Now it does after you come to a stop. Can you purchase one of these and how much are they?

Q. Noisy Valves on cold start on 96 Probe. My probe has quite noisy valves especially on cold start. I have been told it is a "common" problem with this particular engine. Apparently it is caused by using poor quality fuel (previous owner). Questions is, is this "normal" or will this cause some serious damage to the engine in the long run ? How can this be corrected ?

Q. I have a friend with a 94 probe (base model). I was driving it today, and when I started the car I heard a "gurgling" noise. I looked around and found out that it was Power Steering fluid. Q. I need your help. Approximately 1 week ago my parked car was hit by an unknown car. A witness gave me a partial plate and I have reconstructed the tail light lens from the shards. Several people have told me that it looks like a Ford Probe from either the 1989, '90 or '91 model year. The tail light is banded black and red. There is a black band 1 1/4" wide, then a red band 1/4" wide, then a black band 3/4" wide, then a 1/2" wide red band and a 1/2" wide red band. There may be other bands but I don't have any more pieces. I would appreciate your help. If the police and I can't locate this car, I will have to pay $500 out of my own pocket.

Thank you for your help.

The Wiper motor is SHOT! It'll cost about 300 dollars for the dealer to fix, and 80 for the part if you can find it at a local parts store.

The heater core is likely plugged. You can try shooting high pressure water or air
into and thru the core. Otherwise, it's an expensive fix. Dealers want 600- 70-- dollars to replace the heater core. It's outrageous!
